The Flannel Phenomenon

Written by QRG Staff | Aug 17, 2018 5:49:00 PM

We reported Wednesday that "Flannel isn't going anywhere," which got us thinking, where did it come from? Promo Marketing reported that "The long-held joke in manufacturing circles, pertaining to our beloved yarn-dyed plaid flannel shirt, always began and ended with price. How cheap? How low did you land that flannel shirt? The plaid flannel shirt was a disposable item at $4 or less, mass-produced using questionable-quality fabric, to be sold at a bargain basement special price in a local big box retailer catering to the masses, the oil fields, the transient workers of the world, left in a hotel room and discarded. That was the life cycle of the typical retail-purchased plaid flannel shirt."

Today, however, the traditional plaid flannel your grandfather wore to do chores, and your father wore to duck hunt, is now the epitome of fashion. No longer relegated to LL Bean and Cabela's, flannel is now one of the most fashionable pieces you can wear this Fall. To avoid the lumberjack look, pick classic checked patterns like red-and-black buffalo plaid and layer them. Black, gray, white, navy, brown, blue, and green are all good color choices, too.

Worried about decorating flannel?  Don't be!  Tonal thread colors, on-the-cuff logos, center-back decoration, and the standard left-chest above-the-pocket decoration are all ideal choices for today's assortment.
